Preparing for Your Dental Bridge

Preparing for Your Dental Bridge

If you have one or more missing teeth, your dentist may suggest a dental bridge in Houston. Dental bridges provide a solution for replacing a missing tooth. These structures consist of two or more crowns which hold a replacement tooth in the gap by bridging the space. Your dentist will complete several steps to prepare your mouth for a dental bridge.

First, your dentist will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap, which are referred to as the abutment teeth. He will re-contour the teeth to hold crowns by removing a portion of their enamel. Next, your dentist will take impressions of the teeth from which the crowns and pontic, which is the replacement tooth, will be designed. You may wear a temporary bridge until your permanent one is complete.

During a second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary bridge and your permanent dental bridge will be checked for a proper fit. Once you and your dentist decide that the bridge provides the right bite for your mouth and sits well on your teeth, it will be cemented into place.
