A Look at the Process of Reconstructive Dentistry

Has your dentist recommended reconstructive dentistry in Houston? If so, this may be because you have missing teeth, chips, cracks, or cavities. Reconstructive and restorative dentistry procedures use various methods to replace or restore your natural teeth.

Examination

To determine if you could benefit from reconstructive dentistry, your dentist will begin with an examination. Ideally, you should see your dentist at least twice per year for checkups that can detect small problems in your mouth before they have a chance to grow into more significant issues. During your exam, your dentist will look over your mouth, gums, and teeth. He will search for signs of damage and will probe your teeth to detect areas of decay. If your dentist feels it is necessary, he may recommend dental X-rays to get a view of the interior structure of your teeth.

Evaluation

After examining the health of your mouth, your dentist will evaluate any areas that seem problematic. In some cases, he may advise leaving small issues that don’t affect the function of your teeth if there is a chance that they may not worsen. However, if he spots cavities, chips, or cracks, he may recommend one of several reconstructive dentistry procedures.

Treatment

The most common type of reconstructive dentistry is dental fillings. If you have a cavity in one of your teeth, your dentist will numb the site, remove the decayed area, and fill the hole left behind with silver amalgam, gold, or composite resin to restore the tooth’s original shape. For more significant cavities that leave a tooth with only a small amount of healthy tooth structure, your dentist may advise the placement of a crown. Dental crowns are customized to match the color and shape of your original tooth, and fit like a cap over the natural tooth structure that remains. If you have lost a tooth or must have a tooth removed, your dentist may suggest a dental implant. This type of reconstructive procedure involves placing a metal post in the patient’s jaw, to which a crown is attached, which will replace the original tooth.
