A tooth infection can go from mild to serious very quickly. What starts as a small ache can turn into swelling, severe pain, or even a medical emergency if left untreated.

When an infection spreads deep into the tooth and surrounding tissue, extraction may be the safest way to stop it. Removing the infected tooth helps protect your health and prevent further damage to your gums, jaw, or nearby teeth.

The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston offers expert care for infected tooth extraction. We act fast, treat you with care, and make your comfort a priority. Whether you’re in pain now or have been told your tooth may need to come out, we’re here to help quickly and safely.

There’s no need to wait. Relief starts with the right team, and you’ve found it.

Understanding Tooth Infections

A tooth infection happens when bacteria get inside a tooth and spread to the soft tissue or surrounding bone. This often starts with a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or untreated gum disease. If the infection reaches the root, it can cause serious pain and swelling.

In some cases, an infected tooth can be saved with a root canal or other treatment. But when the damage is too severe, removing the tooth is the best way to stop the infection and protect your health.

At The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston, we take every tooth infection seriously. Our goal is to treat the problem quickly, relieve your pain, and help you avoid complications. We’ll examine the tooth, explain your options, and recommend what’s best for your health—whether that’s saving the tooth or removing it safely.

Signs You May Need an Infected Tooth Extraction

Tooth infections don’t always show up right away. Sometimes, symptoms start small and get worse over time. Knowing what to look for can help you act quickly and avoid bigger problems.

Here are common signs that may mean your tooth is infected and needs to be removed:

  • Severe, throbbing tooth pain that doesn’t go away.
  • Swelling in your gums, jaw, or face.
  • Pus or discharge near the affected tooth.
  • A bad taste or smell in your mouth.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Pain when chewing or touching the tooth.
  • Red, inflamed, or bleeding gums around the tooth.
  • A visible hole or deep cavity in the tooth.

These symptoms often point to an infection that has reached the inner part of the tooth or surrounding tissue. If the tooth can’t be saved, extraction may be needed to stop the infection from spreading.

Our Infected Tooth Extraction Procedure

Tooth extractions can sound scary, but they don’t have to be. When done right, the process is simple, gentle, and a big step toward feeling better. Here’s how we handle infected tooth extractions at The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston:

Step 1: Consultation and Diagnosis

We begin with a full exam. This includes looking at your tooth, checking the area for swelling or infection, and taking an X-ray. This helps us see what’s going on under the surface. If the tooth can’t be saved, we’ll talk with you about your options and explain why extraction is the best step.

Step 2: Making You Comfortable

Your comfort is always a priority. Before we begin the extraction, we gently numb the area around the tooth. This keeps you from feeling pain during the procedure. If you’re feeling anxious or nervous, we can also talk to you about sedation options to help you relax.

Step 3: Safe Tooth Removal

Once you’re fully numb, we carefully remove the infected tooth. We use gentle tools and slow, steady movements to make the process smooth and safe. You may feel some pressure, but you won’t feel pain. We work calmly and keep you informed throughout the procedure so there are no surprises.

Step 4: Cleaning the Area

After the tooth is out, we clean the area to remove any infection and reduce the risk of future problems. Sometimes, we place a small piece of gauze or a medicated dressing to protect the area as it heals.

Step 5: Aftercare and Instructions

You’ll receive simple instructions to follow at home. These include how to manage swelling or discomfort, what to eat, and how to keep the area clean. We’ll also tell you what to avoid, like smoking, hard foods, or drinking through a straw for the first few days.

Step 6: Follow-Up and Support

We may schedule a follow-up to check how you’re healing, or to talk about replacing the tooth if needed. And if you have any questions after your visit, we’re just a phone call away.

We know extractions aren’t something anyone looks forward to, but sometimes, they’re the best way to protect your health and bring relief. Our team is here to guide you, support you, and make sure you feel cared for from start to finish.

I was a patient of Dr. Gervais before he retired and then became a patient under the practice of Dr. Cuellar and Kipp. Of the many compliments I could give, the top three that will make me a patient for life are 1) they were always listening to my concerns, 2) the follow up treatment was always in my interest, and 3) the icing on the cake was the reconstructive work he performed was top tier. Therefore, on a 5 star scale, they max it out! Thank you Dr. Cuellar and Staff for everything!

I have been doing a lot of searching roughly for at least 4 years for the best Dental Implant Dentist. One day as I was watching one of the Television Channels in Houston, Dr. Hanna was the guest along with one of the clinic's client being interviewed. After that episode I decided that " Dr. Hanna " will be that Implant Dentist that i have been looking for. I therefore contacted Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston right away and scheduled an appointment. On day one I was already amazed of the excellent customer service that I received. Everyone in the clinic are very professional, nice and made sure that I was comfortable including my husband . All my questions and concerns were answered in a timely manner. The cost of the Implant and whole process were explained clearly and to me it was reasonable. During the Implant procedure all the staff made sure that I was comfortable and explained all the post procedure expectations. I am very happy and satisfied with the excellent customer service that I received. Many Thanks to Dr. Hanna and to all the staff for all the hard work and dedication. I therefore highly recommend Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston for and any Dental services and Implant needs.Update on my review: My final teeth were placed after months of careful adjustments to ensure that it was the right fit. I was so happy and impressed how it looked really good and felt right. The fit is impressive. Many Thanks again to Dr. Hannah and to the whole team of Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston. A very special Thanks and shout out to "KIPP", he is "awesome " He is very knowledgeable, competent, gentle, caring and professional . He helped me so much throughout this process. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to remove a tooth infection?

The cost depends on the severity of the infection and the treatment needed. We’ll examine your tooth, explain your options, and provide clear pricing before any treatment begins.

Yes. In many cases, removing an infected tooth is the best way to stop the infection and prevent it from spreading. Our dentists at The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston take every precaution to keep you safe and comfortable during the procedure.

Tooth extraction costs can vary based on the complexity of the case. Simple extractions tend to cost less than surgical ones. We offer competitive pricing and flexible payment options, and our team will explain all costs upfront.

Healing after a tooth extraction takes a little time, but with the right care, it’s usually smooth and simple. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Rest is important. Give your body time to start healing. Avoid heavy lifting or intense activity on the day of your extraction. Keep your head slightly raised when lying down to reduce swelling.
  • Right after the procedure, we’ll place gauze over the area. Bite down gently to keep it in place. A little bleeding is normal for a few hours. If bleeding continues or worsens, swap in fresh gauze and call us if needed.
  • Mild swelling is common and usually peaks within 24 to 48 hours. Use an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease any soreness, but we’ll let you know if stronger medication is needed.
  • Stick to soft, cool foods for the first couple of days. Think yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and soup. Avoid hot drinks, spicy foods, crunchy snacks, and anything that could disturb the healing area.
  • Brush your other teeth like normal, but be gentle around the extraction site. Don’t rinse or spit forcefully on the first day. After 24 hours, you can rinse with warm salt water a few times a day to help keep the area clean.

Avoid

  • No smoking or vaping (slows healing).
  • No drinking through straws (can dislodge the blood clot).
  • No touching the area with your tongue or fingers.
