Teeth contouring is a cosmetic treatment that smooths out small flaws in your smile. It’s sometimes called tooth reshaping or enamel shaping.

The goal is to gently adjust the length, shape, or edges of your teeth. This can fix things like tiny chips, rough edges, or slightly uneven teeth.

We carefully remove a thin layer of enamel using safe, precise tools. There’s no pain, no numbing, and no long recovery time. Most people don’t even feel a thing.

Our cosmetic dental team at The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston has years of experience using teeth contouring to refine and enhance natural smiles. We focus on precision, safety, and aesthetics with every treatment. Using advanced tools and a gentle touch, we reshape enamel to bring better balance and symmetry to your teeth.

What Is Teeth Contouring?

Teeth contouring, also called tooth reshaping, is a cosmetic dental procedure that improves the shape and look of your teeth. It’s a quick way to fix little things that bother you, like a rough edge, a slightly longer tooth, or a small overlap.

During the procedure, we gently remove a thin layer of enamel (the hard outer layer of your tooth). This helps smooth out sharp points, even out your smile, or make your teeth look more balanced.

We use precise tools and treat everything with care. In most cases, there’s no drilling into the inner part of the tooth and no need for anesthesia. Most patients say it feels like someone lightly sanding their nails.

This treatment is best for people with healthy teeth and minor imperfections. It won’t fix large chips or deep cracks, but it works wonders for small changes that make your smile look cleaner and more even.

Who is a Suitable Candidate for Teeth Contouring in Houston?

Teeth contouring is made for people who have:

  • Minor chips or rough edges.
  • Slightly uneven tooth lengths.
  • Small overlaps between teeth.
  • Pointy or oddly shaped teeth.
  • Teeth that look a little too long or sharp.

If your teeth are healthy and your enamel is strong, you’re likely a good fit. It’s a great option if you want fast, subtle changes without going through more involved treatments like veneers or braces.

We don’t recommend contouring if your teeth are badly damaged or if you have thin enamel. In those cases, we’ll talk you through other options that may be a better fit, like bonding or dental implants.

The Teeth Contouring Procedure at CDGH

Teeth contouring is simple, but it starts with careful planning. Every detail matters, even when the changes are small. Here’s how we do it at The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston:

Step 1: Consultation and Exam

It all begins with a visit to our office. We take a close look at your teeth, check your enamel, and make sure you’re a good candidate. Plus, if contouring is not the best solution for you, we will recommend another makeover for your unique needs. We also talk about what you’d like to change, whether it’s smoothing sharp edges, shortening a tooth, or evening things out.

Step 2: Marking and Planning

Before we start, we outline the areas that need shaping with a pencil or marker. This lets you see exactly what we plan to adjust. It’s a small but important step that helps us keep everything precise and balanced.

Step 3: Reshaping the Enamel

Using a fine sanding tool or strip, we gently remove tiny amounts of enamel. The goal is to smooth rough spots, fix small overlaps, or shape the tooth for better symmetry. We go slowly and carefully, checking your bite and the overall look as we go.

Step 4: Polishing for a Natural Finish

Once the reshaping is complete, we polish your teeth to a smooth, natural shine. This step helps everything blend in and feel great when you run your tongue across your teeth.

Step 5: Aftercare and Follow-Up

There’s no recovery time, but we’ll give you tips to keep your smile healthy and strong. Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups are all you need. If you’ve combined contouring with another treatment, we’ll schedule your next step and keep things moving forward.

I was a patient of Dr. Gervais before he retired and then became a patient under the practice of Dr. Cuellar and Kipp. Of the many compliments I could give, the top three that will make me a patient for life are 1) they were always listening to my concerns, 2) the follow up treatment was always in my interest, and 3) the icing on the cake was the reconstructive work he performed was top tier. Therefore, on a 5 star scale, they max it out! Thank you Dr. Cuellar and Staff for everything!

I have been doing a lot of searching roughly for at least 4 years for the best Dental Implant Dentist. One day as I was watching one of the Television Channels in Houston, Dr. Hanna was the guest along with one of the clinic's client being interviewed. After that episode I decided that " Dr. Hanna " will be that Implant Dentist that i have been looking for. I therefore contacted Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston right away and scheduled an appointment. On day one I was already amazed of the excellent customer service that I received. Everyone in the clinic are very professional, nice and made sure that I was comfortable including my husband . All my questions and concerns were answered in a timely manner. The cost of the Implant and whole process were explained clearly and to me it was reasonable. During the Implant procedure all the staff made sure that I was comfortable and explained all the post procedure expectations. I am very happy and satisfied with the excellent customer service that I received. Many Thanks to Dr. Hanna and to all the staff for all the hard work and dedication. I therefore highly recommend Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston for and any Dental services and Implant needs.Update on my review: My final teeth were placed after months of careful adjustments to ensure that it was the right fit. Combining Teeth Contouring with Other Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic Bonding

Sometimes, contouring removes a bit of enamel to smooth things out. Other times, you may need to add a little to reshape or fill in small gaps. That’s where bonding comes in. We apply a tooth-colored resin to build up the tooth in just the right places. Bonding and contouring work hand-in-hand to fix uneven shapes, close small spaces, and create a more even look.

Teeth Whitening

Whitening is a great way to complete your new smile. After contouring, your teeth may look more even, but stains or discoloration can still stand out. A professional whitening treatment can brighten your entire smile, helping your newly shaped teeth look clean, fresh, and vibrant.

Other Enhancements

In some cases, patients combine contouring with treatments like veneers, Invisalign, or gum contouring. These combinations are especially helpful when the goal is to improve both tooth shape and overall alignment or balance.

At The Comprehensive Dental Group of Houston, we look at the full picture. We’ll help you decide what combination of treatments gives you the most natural-looking and long-lasting results. Whether it’s one simple procedure or a few working together, we’ll build a plan that fits your needs and your smile goals.
