Understanding the Process of Getting Veneers

Dental veneers are a popular choice when a patient needs a chipped tooth repaired near Houston. Porcelain teeth veneers are a thin, tooth-colored restoration that is cemented to the affected tooth to renew and brighten a smile.

It will usually take two visits.

The process of receiving dental veneers will take at least two visits. These visits are required to prepare the teeth for the veneers and to design the veneers with the right color and specifications to correctly fit the teeth. Most likely, prior to the first visit, the patient and dentist will discuss how dental veneers are placed, how they are cared for, and the concerns the patient wishes to address, such as a broken tooth. The first visit will be scheduled, and the patient is on his or her way to receiving dental veneers.

A small portion of the tooth’s enamel will be removed.

The only way for porcelain teeth veneers to adhere to the tooth’s surface is for a dentist to remove a small layer of the tooth’s enamel. During the first visit, the dentist will numb the area around the affected tooth or teeth, and the tooth’s surface enamel will be shaved off. This should be a painless procedure. Afterward, the dentist will take various measurements of the affected tooth or teeth using an imaging system or dental impression. These measurements are then sent to a lab to fabricate the veneers. The second visit will be scheduled within the next week or so.

Temporary veneers will be placed during the first visit.

Patients will not need to worry about returning to daily life with odd-looking teeth until their custom veneers are made, because the dentist applies temporary dental veneers to the affected teeth. These temporary veneers are meant to protect the teeth, since there is little enamel present, and to keep the patient’s smile relatively the same. The permanent, custom-made veneers will be cemented onto the prepared tooth surface soon after the first visit.
